Though he had always enjoyed singing during his childhood in Cleveland, OH, Joshua Radin had never intended to be a musician. He studied drawing and painting in college, and only after stints working in a gallery, as an art teacher, and as a screenwriter did he decide to give songwriting a try. He played a piece he wrote, "Winter," for friend Zach Braff, who liked it so much he got the song onto Scrubs, the television show he was on. After fans began to request more of his music, Radin decided to seriously pursue it as a career, and soon he signed to Columbia Records, which released his debut album, We Were Here, in 2006. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

  7. Event: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at The Warfield, Sat, Sep 20 9:00p

  8. by 133281
    29 Jul 2008 at 9:22am

After goth pioneers the Birthday Party called it quits in 1983, singer/songwriter Nick Cave assembled the Bad Seeds, a post-punk supergroup featuring former Birthday Party guitarist Mick Harvey on drums, ex-Magazine bassist Barry Adamson, and Einstürzende Neubauten guitarist Blixa Bargeld. With the Bad Seeds, Cave continued to explore his obsessions with religion, death, love, America, and violence with a bizarre, sometimes self-consciously eclectic hybrid of blues, gospel, rock, and arty post-punk, although in a more subdued fashion than his work with the Birthday Party. Cave also allowed his literary aspirations to come to the forefront; the lyrics are narrative prose, heavy on literary allusions and myth-making, and take some inspiration from Leonard Cohen. Cave's gloomy lyrics, dark musical arrangements, and deep baritone voice recall the albums of Scott Walker, who also obsessed over death and love with a frightening passion. However, Cave brings a hefty amount of post-punk experimentalism to Walker's epic dark pop. Cave released his first album with the Bad Seeds, From Her to Eternity, in 1984, which contained a noteworthy cover of Elvis Presley's "In the Ghetto," foreshadowing much of Cave's style and subject matter on the follow-up The Firstborn Is Dead. Kicking Against the Pricks, an all-covers album, broke the band in England with the help of "The Singer," which hit number one on the U.K. independent charts. The album also strengthened Cave's reputation as an original interpreter and a vocal stylist of note. Following 1986's Your Funeral...My Trial, Cave took a two-year hiatus from recording, partially to appear in Wim Wenders' 1987 film Wings of Desire, and then returned with Tender Prey, which featured Cramps guitarist Kid Congo Powers and Cave's strongest vocal performance up to that point. Cave's productivity picked up immensely over the next two years after he kicked a heroin habit. He had two books (1988's -King Ink, a collection of lyrics, plays, and prose, and 1989's -And the Ass Saw the Angel, a novel) published; appeared in the 1989 Australian film Ghosts...of the Civil Dead as a prisoner; recorded a soundtrack to the film with Harvey and Bargeld; and released 1990's The Good Son, his most relaxed, quiet album. Cave received his due as one of the leading figures in alternative rock when he was invited to perform on the 1994 edition of the Lollapalooza tour to promote his Let Love In album. Early in 1996, he released Murder Ballads, a collection of songs about murder. Murder Ballads became Cave's most commercially successful album to date, and, with typical perversity, he followed it with the introspective and personal The Boatman's Call in early 1997. A spoken word release, Secret Life of the Love Song, followed in 1999. Two years later, a rejuvenated Cave teamed up with the Bad Seeds once again for the piano-laden No More Shall We Part. Nocturama was released in 2003, and the double-album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus followed by the end of 2004. After touring in support of the album throughout 2005, Cave embarked on a new project called Grinderman with Bad Seeds members Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, and Jim Sclavunos. The group's self-titled debut was released in 2007, the same year Cave was inducted into Australia's ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2008, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds released Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Steve Huey, All Music Guide

    15 Aug 2008 at 2:38pm

Philadelphia-born Taalib Johnson, aka burgeoning R&B artist Musiq (Soulchild), grew up the oldest of nine children and did not finish high school. Musiq, whose influences include James Brown, Patti LaBelle, Billie Holiday, and Sly & the Family Stone, participated in Philadelphia's open mic scene in his early teens. The son of a die-hard '70s soul music fan, Musiq performed at Philly showcases like the Five Spot and Wilhemina's until his management team, Mama's Boys (Jerome Hipps and Michael McArthur), brought him to Def Jam Records' attention. Musiq's debut album, 2000's Aijuswanaseing, was recorded mostly at the Touch of Jazz Studios in Philadelphia. Musiq's first single, "Just Friends (Sunny)," appeared on the soundtrack to Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, and two years later Musiq released his second album, the spiritual and personal Juslisen, which debuted at number one on the Billboard R&B/hip-hop charts. The following year brought the widely-acclaimed Soulstar, and in 2007, after moving to Atlantic, Musiq released the more mature Luvanmusiq. ~ Kerry Smith, All Music Guide

  11. Event: George Lopez at The Warfield, Sat, Sep 13 8:00p

  12. by 41270
    8 Aug 2008 at 4:55pm

Comedian George Lopez was born on April 23, 1961. A native of Los Angeles, he grew up in San Fernando Valley's Mission Hills, experiencing an economically poor upbringing. The majority of his standup comedy is based specifically on his childhood and the unique characterization of his Hispanic relatives, particularly his grandmother who raised him. His depictions struck a universal chord with his audience not unlike that of his hero Richard Pryor's Mudbone character. After years of struggling as a standup comic, Lopez finally released his first album, Alien Nation, in 1996 and with it his rise to superstardom began. Within five years he had landed his own weekly ABC-TV series, The George Lopez Show, where he is co-creator (with actress Sandra Bullock), writer, producer, and star. Between taping episodes of the TV show, he recorded his next CD, Right Now Right Now, in 2001, followed in 2003 by Team Leader, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The following year Lopez taped his immensely popular Showtime concert Why You Crying? and released his autobiography of the same name. In April of 2005, after Lopez dealt with the life-threatening experience of having a kidney transplant (the donor was his wife, Ann), he bounced back with a wide variety of projects, including the 2006 CD release El Mas Chingon. The disc was recorded live at the Ice House in Pasadena, CA, where he had also recorded Team Leader three years prior. His 2007 album America's Mexican featured material from his HBO special of the same name. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide

The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai was formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single "Tuner," a rarity in the Mogwai discography for its prominent vocals; the follow-up, a split single with Dweeb titled "Angels vs. Aliens," landed in the Top Ten on the British indie charts. Following appearances on a series of compilations, Mogwai returned later in the year with the 7" "Summer"; after another early 1997 single, "New Paths to Helicon," they issued Ten Rapid, a collection of their earliest material. Around the time of recording the superb 1997 EP 4 Satin, former Teenage Fanclub and Telstar Ponies member Brendan O'Hare joined the lineup in time to record Mogwai's debut studio LP, Mogwai Young Team, exiting a short time later to return to his primary projects, Macrocosmica and Fiend. Again a quartet, Mogwai next issued 1998's Kicking a Dead Pig, a two-disc remix collection; the No Education = No Future (F~~k the Curfew) EP appeared a few months later. In 1999, they released Come On Die Young. Rock Action arrived in early 2001. Late that year, Mogwai released the My Father, My King EP; two years later, they issued the ironically titled Happy Songs for Happy People. Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2004 arrived early in 2005. Mr. Beast, which was released in 2006, found the band going in a softer, more reflective direction. Late that year, the band's collaboration with Clint Mansell on the soundtrack to The Fountainhead arrived; Mogwai also crafted the score for Douglas Gordon's Zidane: A 21st Century Portait, which was released in the U.K. in 2006 and in the U.S. the following spring. The Batcat EP, which featured a collaboration with garage-psych legend Roky Erickson, arrived in late summer 2008, heralding the release of The Hawk is Howling that fall. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide The Bristol, England-based experimental duo F~~k Buttons -- Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power -- formed in late 2004 and signed to the ATP label, releasing the "Bright Tomorrow" b/w "Little Bloody Shoulder" 7" single during the fall of 2007, with live dates throughout England (with Liars, Stars of the Lid, and Deerhunter, to name a few) following soon thereafter. They planned to release their first album, Street Horrrsing, in 2008. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide F~~k Buttons was conceived by Andrew Hung & Benjamin John Power in the winter of 2004. Initially the group was born as an outlet for their nihilistic-noise tendencies but quickly, the two F~~k Buttons realised they could harness the use of noise as a tool to immerse and evoke. No longer afraid of melody or rhythm, the group started fusing all these elements to the point when drone becomes melody becomes rhythm. With their electric live performances sealing the notion that the two F~~k Buttons are attempting some kind of transcendence between the listener and the Universe itself, one could easily envisage one?s psyches being shaken by the very rumbles of the earth?s motions. Tribal beats and subtle beautiful melodies weave amongst contorting Technicolor drone-scapes while preaching distorted-vocals scream for dear hope herself? F~~k Buttons straddle you between the wall of sound that lies between the beginning of destruction and the end of birth. This grand noise will fondle you into a state of immersed euphoria.<
